HISTORY

Lord Hayden of Rhia inhabits a position quite different from most of his many relations: as the firstborn son of Stephan of Rhia, who is in turn the firstborn son of the current ruling Lord, Hayden will, in all likelihood, one day himself be the ruling Lord. In fact, it is often joked that he is more likely to inherit than his own father, who many believe might be outlived by Lord Craig. Thus Hayden is seen as a person of importance and thus he and his family live in the main Rhia castle, an honour held by few since even a castle cannot hold the entire Rhia family.

During his youth, Hayden was given the standard training of an heir: he was well-educated both in knowledge and in combat, choosing to follow his father and grandfather’s example and learn to use the lance. Responsibility was always given great importance, especially by Stephan, and Hayden had no choice but to learn it. When he was older, Hayden attended the university in Rhia, where he did manage to gain a decent education alongside the partying which the institution is known for. After graduation, Hayden married Brigit, sister of Lord Anthony of Aeda, and together they had five children. When all was said and done, Hayden had become a proper heir to the House, doing all that was expected of him.

And then the waiting began.

Hayden had seen what this waiting game had done to his father and he decided early on that it would not happen to him. The whole idea of having to wait for your parent – or grandparent as the case may be – to die before your true “job” began seemed incredibly morbid to him. And so, while he did prepare to be Lord of Rhia, it wasn’t his sole focus in life. Thus Hayden would take part in the partying that so many others in his house enjoyed, though he was never quite as fond of them as some of his relatives. He particularly enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting, and became an excellent horseman. However, his favourite activity was always to cook.

Rhia’s location has always made it a haven of trade and one of the things it is best known for is the food. There is almost no food that cannot be found somewhere within the city, though you may have to search hard to find it. This search is Hayden’s pastime of choice. When he was younger, he would sneak off to the kitchens as often as he could, to learn the secrets behind the meals that he would later eat. As he grew older, the secretive nature of these visits lessened, until finally he is an almost expected sight there. While eating the food was always exciting, for Hayden the true joy was found in making something for someone else to eat and get enjoyment from. He particularly is fond of creating meals for his wife, which has had the side effect of putting perhaps a bit more weight than is desirable on her (and on Hayden himself, though it is not as pronounced with him due to his involvement in outdoor sporting events).

Through his many hobbies and pastimes, Hayden has found ways to enjoy the years he has before being lord. He knows that once he does inherit, his life will have to change, and while he is not opposed to that, he plans to get every last moment of pleasure from this lifestyle as he can.

PERSONALITY

In most matters, Hayden is a reasonably laid-back man: he tries not to let much upset him and to appreciate the life which he has. He is very devoted to his wife and children, wanting to do his best to make sure each day of their life is as happy and fulfilled as it can be. He also encourages them to do what they want, within reason, though of course he does focus on getting his eldest son, Antony, properly prepared to be lord himself one day. His main goal in life is to not become his father: Hayden is greatly troubled by the state he has seen Stephan come to.

While Hayden is generally viewed as easy-going, he can and does get serious when matters of importance, mainly politics, are involved. His greatest task at the moment is the betrothal and marriage of Antony, as he has come of the age where these arrangements must be made. He also is looked to, to some extent, with small matters around Rhia that do not require Craig's involvement. Finally, he does try to help his father in some areas, though his success in being allowed to do so is limited.

Hayden is a man who makes the most of what he has. As such, he is quite happy and satisfied with his life and in some ways almost does not want to ever inherit Rhia, though he does feel that he is capable and ready for that responsibility.

APPEARANCE

When Hayden was younger, he was considered fairly handsome and he still is, to an extent, though age and not the world's best eating habits have brought him down a few notches on the attractiveness scale. He is average height and was average build, though he has began to pack on a few more pounds than is average, despite his level of activity. His dark hair has, so far at least, been spared any greying. His eyes are also dark and he has a beard. Hayden keeps his hair and beard cut short, to try and avoid any hair getting into any of his masterpieces. Like his father, Hayden needs reading classes, however he wears his all the time, after messing up one too many recipes because he misread the recipes.
